Couples Counsellingin Calgary

Couples counselling helps resolve problems in relationship and communication between romantic partners.

Couples Therapy

The focus of couples therapy is not on the participants in the relationship, but on the relationship itself. In other words, couples counselling is not the sum of two individual therapies, it is an improvement of the relationship itself by teaching partners new, healthier ways of communicating and expressing their feelings.

Couples therapy can sometimes be a salvation for your family and the first step to realizing that you should go in different directions. This happens sometimes, and it's normal. Sometimes this is the best way to give yourself peace of mind and stop stressing about your relationship.

The most important factor for the effectiveness of couples psychotherapy is motivation of both spouses to work together towards resolving conflicts and mutual understanding in the relationship. If only one partner wants to work on the relationship, psychotherapy will not help.

Couples who seek help really start to hear each other during the session. Why? In the presence of another person, a mediator, we can try and learn to express our own emotional needs effectively and to hear the other partner's needs better. This allows us to try a different model of behaviour, stop fighting and achieve mutual understanding.

  • If you have problems with at least one item on the list above, it may mean that your couple needs help. This does not necessarily mean that you are not suitable for each other or that your couple is doomed.
The problem is that we are not usually taught to build relationships, to understand other people's needs, to express our feelings gently. Therefore, often two good, loving people can hurt each other because they do not know how to do otherwise.
